You’ll be surprised and inspired by these unique ideas!

With more than 6 million kids in the U.S attending camp every summer, camp remains one of America’s favorite pastimes. Yet there is a new camp experience that has dramatically increased in popularity over the last decade – and that is the “specialty” camp. Never before have kids and teens had so many one-of-a-kind camp options to choose from.

While traditional camps offer programs that encourage kids to try a variety of activities, a specialty camp focuses on one topic – or a few related topics. There are now thousands of unique (and sometimes unusual) day and overnight summer camps inspiring children and teens to learn more about what they love.

After considerable research, we’ve gathered a list of some of America’s most unique and rewarding specialty summer camps. Take a look:

Young Actors Camp
Location: Hollywood, California
Ages: 7-19

For kids and teens who dream of acting for the silver screen, this camp is the ultimate learning experience. At Young Actors Camp, campers are taught the tools-of-the-trade for succeeding in Hollywood’s film and television acting industries – and the word on the street is, they have a great time doing so.

This overnight summer camp offers four programs to choose from that include pre-professional activities such as taking headshots, writing a resume, building auditioning skills and improving film-acting techniques.

And what really excites kids is their chance to be in a real Hollywood movie. All YAC campers visit working movie sets and meet real Hollywood movie stars (who come by camp to offer advice and technique tips). This is a true chance of a lifetime for young actors dying to get a glimpse into the world they dream of succeeding in – and after attending Young Actors Camp, kids have a much better chance of doing so.

Young Actors Camp is the only summer camp experience that can lead to a young actor moving to Los Angeles for real work opportunities; and YAC will guide actors and families through the transitional period of this complicated, yet rewarding, process.

WB Surf Camp
Location: Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina
Ages: 6-18

This seriously radical camp is a dream-come-true for kids and teens (and adults!) who want to learn how to surf. WB Surf Camp offers a wide variety of summer camp options. From day and overnight camps to advanced private lessons and international surf tours, WB Surf Camp does it all.

WB teaches kids how to predict, select and ride waves, but they also educate surfing beginners about ocean safety (rip current identification, surf and sun advisories and first-aid), coastal environments, marine life and ocean dynamics.

At this full immersion camp, kids gain knowledge, confidence and surfing ability through progressive and professional instruction – and they have an awesome time doing it!

Camp Winnarainbow
Location: Mendocino, California
Ages: 7-14

Learning about the BIG TOP is BIG FUN! This colorful and positive camp embraces the joy of creativity and personal achievement. For 30 years, Winnarainbow camp leaders have been teaching kids about circus performing arts techniques, such as timing, balance, humor, acting, juggling, dancing, gymnastics, the tightrope, the trapeze, clowning, falling, magic and much more!

Along with the great fun of clowning around, Camp Winnarainbow is also dedicated to providing a beautiful training ground in Northern California that supports a strong communion with nature. One of the camp’s main goals is to show future kids how to embrace and contribute to a harmonious and sustainable world. The creative spirit is nurtured in an atmosphere of approval and mutual encouragement. This truly unique camp experience leaves kids with a powerful sense of the creative community.

          ]]>

Chef Kelly Q. Dietrich’s Kids Culinary Summer of Vermont
Location: Highgate Center, Vermont
Ages: 10+

For kids who are always asking to help in the kitchen and have a natural love for cooking and baking, there isn’t a more suitable camp than Kids Culinary Summer Camp. Offering two programs – The Sauté Kitchen and The Baking and Pastry Arts – this taster’s delight introduces kids to the life of a chef.

A wide berth of culinary skills are taught during the one or two week summer camp sessions, including menu planning, bread and pastry baking, beef and poultry cooking, vegetable cookery, seafood, garnishes, cake decorating, soups and sauces, ethnic cooking, knife and chopping skills, utensil skills, kitchen hygiene and healthy eating habits.

And it’s not all just about the kitchen! The curriculum also includes valuable lessons about nutrition and organic food sources; aquaponics (the integrated growing of tilapia fish and micro-greens and herbs in our greenhouse); organic square foot and container gardening; composting beekeeping; and olive oil herbing and bottling.

This unique camp experience provides kids and teens with valuable skills to use with their families throughout the year, in addition to learning how to pursue a career in the culinary arts. Wouldn’t it be amazing for you son or daughter to skillfully prepare delicious meals for the family on a daily basis?

Canyon Crow Summer Camp
Location: Cortez, Colorado
Ages: 12+

Are your kids constantly out in the yard looking for old arrowheads or digging for buried pottery and other hidden treasures? Well, now there’s a perfect summer camp for these little archeologists to-be.

At Canyon Crow’s overnight summer camp, kids and teens are invited to study the fascinating past of Pueblo Indians who lived in the American Southwest’s Four Corners area. During their weeklong stay, campers join professional archeologists at a real excavation site to learn the proper procedure of sorting and identifying important artifacts.

Kids also have great fun playing traditional Native American games like spear throwing with an atlati and learning ancient practices like building a fire without matches. This interesting camp experience brings kids closer to the heritage of our country and the people who inhabited the region 700 to 2500 years ago.

Camp Lohikan
Location: Lake Como, Pennsylvania
Ages: 7+

Camp Lohikan has taken the game of hide-and-seek to a whole new level. Here campers learn the secrets behind covert operations as they train for exciting missions. Spy camp teaches teamwork, critical thinking, practical skills and physical discipline.

Lohikan’s mini-agents train on 4-wheelers, jet skis and rope courses for quick getaways. (But don’t worry, “quick getaways” in reality means learning safe, evasive driving techniques.)

Kids are also taught combat tactics, martial arts, how to conduct surveillance, code breaking, survival training, interrogation techniques undercover maneuvers and even paintball! (Paintball is limited to 5th grade and up.)

At Camp Lohikan the mission truly IS possible. And what’s the final camp mission? Finding the mole! The kids’ final exam is to participate in a role-playing adventure that is, as they say, “high octane FUN.” This specialty camp experience is an exciting opportunity to understand exactly what it means to be a spy.

Children’s Peace Summer Camp
Location: Boulder, Colorado
Ages: 4-10

Children’s Peace takes kids back to the roots of a simpler time. Spending warm summer days learning about the beauty of the natural world is a wholesome experience that any child will benefit from and enjoy.

This non-profit day camp teaches campers organic gardening practices and environmental stewardship, in addition to the importance of biodiversity and sustainability.

All hands-on activities encourage peace, respect, friendship and the beauty of connecting with the earth. And Children’s Peace is a lot of fun! Beyond gardening, camp activities include scavenger hunts, writing poetry, dancing, making natural dyes from vegetables and candles from bee hive wax and creating a rich variety of art to be appreciated at community coffee shops.

Sewnow! Fashion Studio
Location: Lafayette, California
Ages: 2nd grade and up

If much to your dismay, your little Diane von Furstenberg is cutting up their clothes only to sew them back together again, it might be time to send them to Sewnow! Fashion Studio. At this overnight summer camp, open to boys and girls, kids are allowed to let their creative colors fly.

Known for being a fun, energetic and friendly atmosphere, Sewnow! is a great experience for those starting from scratch, as well as kids with ample experience. Beginners will learn things like basic sewing, cutting and assembly methods, while advanced campers will learn about computerized drafting systems and machine embroidery.

So if your son or daughter is glued to the TV every time Project Runway comes on, this could be his or her own chance of a lifetime.

Astronomy Camp
Location: Tucson, Arizona
Ages: 12-17

This camp is truly out of this world. At Arizona’s longest running science camp, kids are invited to explore the universe by operating research-class telescopes. For the young scientist, engineer, physicist, astronomer and astronaut this experience could be the perfect opportunity to accelerate their hobby and motivate them to explore further.

Astronomy Camp is a full immersion overnight camp where young night owls keep nighttime hours, interact with leading scientists, interpret their own observations and have a great deal of fun hanging out with likeminded kids.

During daylight, campers get to participate in other exciting activities like building rockets, mountain biking, bouldering huge rocks, zip lining, treasure hunting with hand-held GPS and exploring microgravity using SCUBA.

What an amazing experience for any young stargazer!

The Rock Farm
Location: Camptown, Pennsylvania
Ages: 8-16

For kids who have experience playing guitar, drums or electric bass guitar, it’s time to rock out! Seriously, for 25 years The Rock Farm is the place for kids with a big passion for big music.

This intensive rock music program gets kids playing right away. 36 campers and 5 instructors are divided into 12 bands that begin rehearsing immediately. But The Rock Farm is not about superstardom or divas; it’s about progressing, jamming and having fun with other young musicians.

Everyday campers take lessons on their primary instrument, in addition to a lesson on any other instrument of choice, “jam-time” and a nightly show. All of the hard work and practice culminates on the last night of camp where all 12 bands perform in an exciting show called “Band Night”.

Specialty Camp Choices Abound!

With all of these incredibly fun specialty camp options to choose from, kids are more likely than ever to find an amazing summer camp that is just right them.

Camping is always an exciting prospect, whatever age you are. Camping is always an enjoyable activity whether you’re an adult wishing to hide away from a very demanding office schedule or a kid who’s got lots of adrenaline to pump. People across generations can speak about this certain kind of fun is the best thing. The problem though is when people believe that camping is not serious business. Camping is no way a kid’s business though you can bring your kids to a camp site. Lots of preparation, education and, most importantly, good judgment are needed for it in reality.

So how can you tell if you are on the correct track with your camping plans? Take a look at the following camping errors you should never make to give you some very helpful thoughts:

Not Planning

Planning is the only, across-the-board condition for camping enjoyment and fun. It must be in order from the time you leave your home to the time you get to your camp site and right back to the city. If you’re leaving home during a rush hour, it could take you longer to get out of the busy city and get to the site for instance. Who knows what lies ahead on the road – traffic, vehicular accidents, your own engine faltering and many other possibilities that could stall you. By the time you arrive, it could be too dark and difficult to set up camp and inspect the area. If you don’t plan, you could bring food which you won’t be able to eat because you have not had time to chill it below 40 degrees Fahrenheit which is the ideal temperature to keep it safe for consumption. These are only a few of possible situations that could ruin your fun when you go unplanned and there’s absolutely a lot more you don’t want to have to figure in when all you want is a pleasant and smooth adventure.

          ]]>

Not Educating Yourself

You always need to do your research each time you put yourself under circumstances you don’t deal with daily. When you camp, you need to know the kind of weather you can expect or any health alerts that may have been issued by health authorities in the area for instance. Make sure you’re conscious of any virus-carrying insects whose presence has been distinguished. You can’t entirely stay away from snakes when you’re in the wild and while not all of them are dangerous, locate where there are mainly venomous and deadly varieties such as The Timber Rattlesnake in Arkansas or the Osage Copperhead in Missouri. Because bears and other wild animals will be nearby, you have to be aware that leftover food and garbage can attract them through their sense of smell. When you know what you’re dealing with, you’re always on the safe side.

Not Taking Tips Seriously

There are many online articles that offer suggestions for safe camping and though you might feel they are all common sense tips, there are those that can actually save you. For example, when buying a tent or other camping gear, you need to make sure they are made of flame-resistant material as you would most probably be building a fire, unless it is restricted. Untrained campers select their equipment without knowing what to look for and why. Another lifesaving tip may tell you to avoid touching brush piles or harassing those areas in between rocks where snakes could be hiding. These reptiles are submissive by nature and they would always rather not attack unless triggered. As long as you keep them holed in and undisturbed, snakes will leave you alone. It’s definitely clever to take one of those snake bite kits you can purchase commercially.

It’s great to be able to find the chance to escape from the hustle and bustle from time to time in a world as busy as ours. But even when you camp to have a good time, you’ll still have to take it seriously.

If you’re looking for the best camp stove, look online and you’ll find all sorts of information to help you find the right product. Camping stoves can come in many varieties and to make sure you end up buying the right one, know each product inside and out before making that purchase.

Many children and adults are suffering with obesity. They want to reduce weight but they need some guidance. One of the best ways to reduce weight is to join a fat camp
Purpose of fat camp

By joining a weight loss program, children will definitely reduce weight. There will be a dietician who will teach you how to make better food choices and make you realize what type of food you should eat.

How can a child benefit from a fat camp?

When your child joins a fat camp and notice your peers having weight problem it will make you feel comfortable. If your child is fat you can make them join this camp as nobody will bully them.

Nobody will laugh at them or called by different names like fatty, tub-0-butter or fatso. Just this alone can be the reason to send your child to a fat camp. Such a camp can increase your child’s self-esteem. Teens want to join a camp so that they can attract the opposite sex by reducing weight. Many teens want to mingle with the opposite sex but due to their weight problem they may find it difficult.

A lot of people don’t consider suicide a threat when it comes to their loved ones. They think it’s rare, and that it’ll never happen to someone they know. In reality suicide is quite a large problem in United States. There are over 1,100,000 people attempting suicide every year in United States, with more than 132,000 attempts done by children aged 15-24. On top of that there are over 17,000 attempts made by children aged 10-14. To put those numbers in terms easier to comprehend, that’s the population of about 12 colleges and 15 middle schools, trying to kill themselves every year.

Overweight children
tend to be a higher risk group when it comes to suicide attempts. Overweight children have low self esteem issues, they get bullied by kids at school (and get made fun of for being overweight), and they tend to suffer from depression due in part to their social isolation(i.e. being picked last in gym, having few friends). All of these place them into a high risk category for suicide. So placing someone like that(who may already be suicidal) into a fat camp

is a recipe for disaster and will increase the risk of suicide.

First let’s clarify something, there are weight camps and then there are fat camps/boot camps. The former will try to aim to lower your child’s weight through exercise and positive reinforcement, the latter will try to lower your child’s weight through exercise and negative reinforcement(put downs and verbal abuse). Both will make your child lose weight during the program, but one of them can do it without driving your child to the brink of suicide.

So if you are planning on placing your overweight child into a fat camp, find out whether or not they are suicidal. To do so, you need to learn all the potential suicide warning signs, so that you can identify whether or not your child is displaying signs that they are planning to kill themselves.

Sports are enjoyable. But they become even more enjoyable when you see improvements in your skills and eventually excel. Through proper coaching, body conditioning and skills enhancement sport camps help budding athletes better their skills and shine in their particular sport.

Sport camps evolved from summer camps. Instead of the traditional holiday camps wherein children spend time away from home camping, climbing trees, singing songs, flying kites and playing adventure games, these camps provide intensive instruction in almost any sport. They offer top-notch coaching, scientific training and complete facilities in a conducive setting. Participants will be inspired to learn, to train, and to improve.

Just like summer camps, there are day camps and overnight camps (which usually last from 3 to 8 weeks). Traditionally, they teach boys and girls to play different sports. These camps focus more on the personality development and character improvement brought about by sports. These are usually run by qualifies instructors and counselors, who ensure that campers learn new skills while enjoying the traditional camp environment. Needless to say, this type of sport camps is geared towards giving you the best time of your life while learning new skills and making new acquaintances.

There are also multi-discipline sport camps, which are more serious towards improvement of the athletes’ skills. These are usually offered by universities and often boast of experienced and knowledgeable coaching staff, excellent facilities and conducive environments. Some of these camps offer individualized instructions from the coaches for better results.

Many focus almost exclusively on a particular sport. This gives them the chance to specialize their personnel and facilities towards improving the participant’s performance in that specific sport. These camps provide extensive training, and the instructors are often experienced coaches of local teams. In some cases, professional trainers and coaches are used for an even more effective sports development regimen.

There are sport camps for those with physical disabilities. For instance, there is a sport camp for blind and visually impaired children. This specialized camp allows these youngsters to develop athletic skills, experience competition in a sports setting and make fitness and exercise a part of their lives. These camps are sponsored by the US Association of Blind Athletes.

So if you want to become a varsity player or even a professional in your preferred sport, these sport camps are for you. I wonder if Michael Jordan attended one of these.

You do not have to spend so much money to enjoy a fantastic time with your family. Having time to spend with your family is very important as it strengthens the bond between the members of the family.

Many families often opt to enjoy a great camping weekend by the lakeside. It can be so much fun to have horses around the camping area.

The beauty about camping comes with its low cost. It is a chance to enjoy a fabulous time while taking advantage of the facilities that are available at the camping area. Some of the activities that the family can engage in while camping include; swimming in the lakes, hiking and fishing among others. Imagine the thought of enjoying an exciting midnight trail while enjoying ghost scary ghost stories. Only the brave hearted can enjoy this.

In order to come up with a wonderful camping weekend there are certain things that you should keep in mind.

Identify the camping ground, make the necessary reservations, come up with a budget, get all the requirements ready and finally decide on the date. Come up with a checklist so that you ensure that you do not leave anything out. The main benefit of making early preparations is the fact that you ensure that every little detail is handled. It is important to point out that a very small omission can have negative effect on the family camping weekend. Keep your budget at reasonable levels so that you do not have to dig to much in to your savings.

It is fun to add some games in to your camping trip. A nice game of cards, hide and seek, running races with a price tag can be great fun during camping. Teach the kids how to prepare food in the woods and light camp fires. In the evening it is really amazing to sit around the camp fires and laugh your hearts out. Take the opportunity to do some of the craziest fun things during your family camping weekend together.

During this family weekend escapade, parents get to catch up with their children’s progress. With the fast paced economy that people live in today, a lot happens during the week that escapes the attention of the parents. During such camping trips, try and identify your child’s talent through the activities that they want to engage in. With adequate plans in place, you and your family can enjoy a fantastic weekend together.

My wife and I like to camp at least once a month, so for the New Year’s weekend we decided to camp at John Prince Campground. The campground is located on the South end of John Prince Park. The park is about five miles west of I-95 in Lake Worth Florida, and is owned and operated by Palm Beach County. We were quiet pleased when we arrived to see that this campground was so family oriented and has so much to offer.

John Prince Park covers more than seven hundred acres and has a large variety of recreational activities. Some of the park activities include fishing, boating, skiing, playgrounds, fitness trail, bicycling, driving range, and a nature trail. In addition, there are lighted basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts. Wanting to play a family soccer game, there is two athletic fields large enough to accommodate any outdoor sport. Inside the park is seven miles of paved bicycle path, also suitable for jogging. The fitness trail is located in the center of the park, it is made of mulch and is a little over one mile in length and has twenty stretching locations. Unlike most State Parks, there is no fee for admittance into this park.

          ]]>

The campground covers forty-eight acres with 277 lots. Forty six of these sites sit adjacent to Lake Osborne. Many others have a great view of the Lake. Located throughout the campground are four shower buildings with restrooms, three large playgrounds for the younger ones, and a petanque court. All the lots are paved and provide water with thirty or fifty amp service, while some are full hookup.

If you like riding bicycles as my wife and I do, then this is an excellent place. If you leave the campground and follow the bike path it is eight and a half miles to the end of the bike path. At this point you have a choice, turn around or ride for two and a half miles on the sidewalk to get back to the entrance of the park. I don’t recommend riding on the highway. Our day always started by walking a mile to the fitness trail for an early morning jog. Upon returning to the camper, a small breakfast prepared on our outdoor camping stove is just the ticket to build up a little energy. After clean up duties, it’s time for our bicycle ride around the paved trail, a great way to burn the breakfast calories off. Mind you, she does it for the exercise, I do it for leisure, and of course she leaves me behind.

In the evening we normally use our camping grill to prepare dinner. Afterwards a nice walk around the campground is very enjoyable. We always find it amazing how many fellow campers will speak to us as we walk by; it appears that most campers are just as eager to meet new people, as we are. Not only is this a great way to learn something about other places, but their culture as well.

My wife and I started camping four years ago. It started when our neighbors invited us to the Keys for a weekend getaway. We knew right away that camping would become part of our lives. The best part of camping for us, is cooking on an outdoor camping stove and eating at the picnic table. Besides this, what better way to meet new and exciting people.
